Due to the applied load there is only one non-zero stress in the initial x-y set of axes: sx = P/A = 40 kN/(2000 mm2) = 20 MPa, sy = txy = 0 Rotating the stress element by 45° gives: sN = (sx+0)/2 + (sx–0)cos(90)/2 + (0°)sin(90°) = sx/2 sN = 10 MPa |
