Sol'n: To determine the stress normal to the weld, one must use the stress transformation equations or the Stress Transformation Calculator. Due to the applied load there is only one non-zero stress in the initial x-y set of axes: s_{x} = P/A = 40 kN/(2000 mm^{2)} = 20 MPa, s_{y} = t_{xy} = 0 Rotating the stress element by 45° gives: s_{N} = (s_{x}+0)/2 + (s_{x}–0)cos(90)/2 + (0°)sin(90°) = s_{x}/2 s_{N} = 10 MPa |
