Given: A rectangular beam with breadth b = 25 mm and height h = 50 mm is subjected to both a distributed load of w = 4.0 N/mm and a point load of P = 500 N. The length of the beam is 2 m.

Req'd:
Determine the bending moment due only to the point load at the middle of the span M_P .

Sol'n: The bending moment at the mid-span due to the point load is:

M_P = (P/2)(L/2) = (250 N)(1 m)

M_P = 250 N·m
