Practice Problem 10-2 | Back | Index | Next |
Given: An acrylic plastic meter stick has a cross-section of 8 mm by 24 mm, and Young's modulus of 3.1 GPa. Assume the ends are fixed. Req'd: Determine the critical buckling load Pcr. |
Sol'n: From the Euler Buckling Formula, the critical load for a fixed-fixed column is: Pcr = (p2EI) / (L/2)2 For this case E = 3.1 GPa, L = 1.0 m, and I cr= 24·83/12 = 1024 mm4 The critical buckling load is then: Pcr = p2(3.1 GPa)(1024 mm4) / (0.5 m)2 = Pcr = 1270 N |
